Learning privately can be hard. Here’s some help.

Learning to drive privately can be stressful, for both the learner and the supervising driver, who is often a parent. Tensions can run high, and progress may stall. Too often, practice consists of the same repeated trips without a clear focus. While familiar routes help build local confidence, this can sometimes be misleading.

Without structure, variety, or technical know-how, private learners often find it harder to progress. In Livingston, the pass rate for instructor-trained learners averages around 55-60%, compared to just 35-40% for those learning privately.

But you can improve your chances by practising with purpose and building your knowledge. I’ve gathered some helpful resources from YouTube, the DVSA, and my own materials to support your learning journey.

There’s a huge amount of content available online, some excellent, some not so much. I’ve put together a selection of resources that I believe will be genuinely helpful for you. Try to avoid the more clickbaity titles; they can be entertaining but aren’t always the most useful. And be careful not to get lost down rabbit holes!

You must not access these resources whilst the vehicle engine is on, and you are either the driver or the supervising driver. For you, it could be 6 points, a fine and massive increases in insurance premiums for many years. For someone else, it could be a life altering injury or death. It is never OK to use a device whilst driving or supervising someone.

Many of my pupils also supplement their learning with private practice, which is hugely valuable. However, supervising drivers often have gaps in their knowledge, may not observe the learner closely enough, and can struggle to explain things in different ways or check understanding.

I’m happy to support by assessing learner progress and providing guidance on what still needs work and how to improve it.
